The epic Love story of Prithviraj and Sanyogita

Prithviraj Chauhan, the last ruler of the Chauhan dynasty who ruled Delhi to the Muslim conquest of the Indian subcontinent. The tale of the king’s glory spread as wildfire amidst all other dynasties including Kannauj. Prithviraj’s victory reached the ears of Sanyogita. But before the two could flourish their love, Jayachand, the king of Kannuaj and Prithviraj Chauhan’s relationship was strained.

Sanyogita’s father wanted to become the ultimate king over the other Rajput kings. So he decided to perform a yagya called the “Rajsuya Yagya”. Prithviraj who just won the hearts of the Rajputs, denied being a part of this Yagya. In fact he opposed the idea of Jayachand’s supremacy.

This beginning of the evince

Jayachand was well aware of the complications that the ruler of Chuahan Dynasty would do! At the same time, Sanyogita was smitten about her prince charming. She became deeply devoted to Prithviraj.

Infact, according to hindu legends, Sanyogita fell in love with the Chauhan king the moment she saw his portrait.  The paintings of the King and Queen was crafted by Panna Ray, a well known artist of that time. The same artist painted the princess and showed it to Prithviraj. Now we know they both began their journey of romance the moment they saw each other’s painting.

Sanyogita’s Swayamvara

Soon, the velour of Sanyogita’s swayamvara were announced amidst all rulers of the dynasties but not Prithviraj. As Jayachand did not want to get involve into any conflict with the king and to insult him he even incarnated a statue of Prithviraj at his front yard. Poor Sanyogita, who gave her heart to his beloved king felt helpless knowing that the suitor won’t appear to the occasion. Sanyogita, being devastated decided to pen down her feelings towards the king. While expressing her desires to marrying him. The letter safely reached to the hands of Prithviraj who promised the princess to come to the swayamvara.

The day arrived when Sanyogita was to marry a king. She rejected all the kings and princes; ant went straight to the statue of Prithviraj. All this while, The ruler of Chauhan was hiding between the crowd, and came out to pursue Sanyogita to put the garland around his neck. When the ceremony concluded, a huge amount of tension arouse amidst the other Rajput kings.

Prithviraj looked into Jayachand’s eyes and challenged the king of Kannauj to stop him from taking his wife to the Chauhan Dynasty. That day, thousands of soldiers laid their lives due to the command of Jayachand. Who was up with rage and wanted to take vengeance from the king.

The War..

The king formed a truce with the defeater of Ghurid Empire to extend his army and attack Delhi. This time the ghori’s army defeated the Rajput king and captured the Chauhan Dynasty. Prithviraj was so in love with his beloved Sanyogita that he didn’t even cared about his defeat.

But being a man of honor, Prithviraj refused to bow his head in front of the Ghori Sultan. So, the sultan decided to blind him for eternity by using hot iron rod.

Bardai, the court poet who had been following Prithviraj in the battle, duped the Sultan into arranging an archery exhibition by Prithviraj Chauhan. Prithviraj was a trained archer who could hit the target via the power of his ears.

The preparation of an archery tournament was to be held for the warriors. Bardai subtly informed his blind monarch of the Sultan’s exact location. When Muhammad Ghori told the blind king to aim, Prithviraj took shots and fired the arrow at him, relying on Bardai’s instructions. Muhammad Ghori was stained right on his heart who died on the spot of the battle field.

To prevent additional humiliation at the hands of Ghori’s warriors, the court-poet slashed Prithviraj and himself. Following Chand Bardai’s death his son, Jalhan, finished the epic love saga of the king.
